Well, as nobody comes up with its experience, I can relate some experience with OpenWFE (but I'm the project leader... not very neutral)
OpenWFE's engine is currently used in a document signature workflow in a small startup. This flow product is currently at prototype level, these guys hope to leverage funds with it in the following weeks. Their frontend is Zope and they go through the python OpenWFE interface to interact with the worklist and the workflow engine.
At the company where I work, with use OpenWFE in a issue tracker configuration for software applications we deployed on our customers' sites.
We also have a Document Management System sister to the OpenWFE engine, the flow engine is used for indexation flows currently. One of our customer is negotiating with us to enable its incoming invoices to be directly fed by a flow automatic agent into its ERP system.
Voilà.

Thank you for the details. My project is in its inception stage and it will probably need something like a workflow engine. Since I never used and wfe (and I should have) I'm looking for a good lib to start with.
