Good signposts. You want a project that helps you achieve your goals. Raw code is typically not enough.
The paragraph about API usability particularly resonated with me. I am working on a project which is to be open sourced later on. To support its use-case centric API design and documentation, I wrote JCite. This tool allows one to cite from dedicated use-case unit-tests directly into the documentation, with syntax highlighting and marker-pen-style code highlighting. Working like this is just great!
