.Net ports of Java projects

What's great is that once they are ported, I can use those libraries in C#, vb, C++, J#, etc. Makes things very flexible. Of course, you make the big assumption that opensource is innovative to begin with, which I think is the fatal flaw of your post - name ONE innovative (and I mean Innovative) program that is under GPL in any framework or language....Opensource = taillight chasing.

Fatal flaw

You make the big assumption that open source = GPL.

GPL != Open Source

Just to correct your ignorance, GPL is not equal to open source.

Here's one library that's innovative: "drools" an object oriented Rete engine. Now judging from the ignorance of your original post, you wouldn't have a clue to why it's innovative.

If you need to see more, just look up "101 Reasons why java is better...". See search at the upper right corner.

AspectJ Eclipse Your web browser! If its Netscape or IE its based on mozilla an open source product.

Innovation?

How about Apache Cocoon? There is NOTHING like it in the closed source world, and it's 100% through and through open source.

You seem to forgot the glories of the past

If you go back in time, long before GPL existed, long before the people started to care (or even hear) about opensource you'll find plenty of examples of innovations: BSD UNIX, ping, traceroute, sendmail... Think EMACS, one of the first (if not the first) text editor with scripting capabilities. The linux kernel. And I still haven't reach middle 90's.

It's true that opensource is not related to innovationm to say that no opensource project is innovative is plainly wrong.

innovative open source

Posted by Anonymous User at 2003-08-13 01:32 PM

this is sooo easy.

Apache: THE industry standard. HTTP 1.1 is innovative enough to support a multi-billion dollar internet economy. OK, it's BSD, not GPL, but open source is open source.

TCP/IP - innovative enough to spawn the internet. No sure of licensing, I think it's probably a RFC and/or public domain. What do you like, NETBEUI?

MySQL (compare how to do result set paging in MySQL vs SQL Server, Oracle, etc.
MySQL definitively is innovative, the others could stand to do some catch-up themselves)

Struts - innovative, open source, MS will probably clone this soon for DOT-NOT.

Gnutella - innovative enough to destabilize an entire industry group of (IMO, dont get all lawsuit crazy on me) dinosaurs, aka RIAA.
