With Adobe providing an open source implementation of LiveCycle DataServices (Blaze DS), Java developers would lose to not learn Flex UI development and integration with Java backends. This is the wave of the future.

Good observation. I agree, Flex should be in this list.

However, I wasn't quite sure of it's Java 'footprint'.

Flex ? Mmmm, not a really multiplatform choices. We're still waiting AIR and flex builder for LINUX.
