Rails vs. Python?

Posted by Anonymous User at 2008-04-09 01:07 PM
You just spent an entire post talking about Rails, the web framework, and Python, the fully mature programming language. What was your intended point? You mention the language Ruby. You riff on Rails for a while, because it is the cool thing to do (I don't disagree with some of your hidden points, mind you). The title of your post, and, subsequently, the first paragraph, led me to believe you would actually talk about Ruby in comparison to Python, and why you believe Google chose it.

I am disappointed that you chose simply to take shots at Rails (whether deserved or not). If you wanted to rip on Rails as a web framework, the least you could have done is mention other web frameworks in comparison, whether Python (Django, Pylons) or other Ruby frameworks (Merb, Ramaze, Sinatra)

What was the point? Were you just keen on hyping Python and slamming the Rails framework?

My point exactly. Too much hype driving Rails/Ruby, not enough coverage of Python. Maybe Google's AppEngine changes the status quo.

I think the difference between the communities are that Ruby (as a consequence of Rails) are more web application centric and Python having more diversity and thus less focus. In short, you'll find a lot of innovative applications and frameworks in the Python space. Can you point out some innovative projects in the Ruby/Rails space?
