A Subscription Plan for Eclipse
MyEclipse IDE has put together quite a compelling business. Provide the missing J2EE pieces for the Eclipse IDE, provide paid support and provide plug-in development. For a subscription of $29.95 a year, you get quarterly updates of the otherwise free development environment. Presently, they've combined plugins from Genuitec, SolarEclipse and Aston, the plan is to give an ever more comprehensive toolset for J2EE development.
Now the obvious is that you can get these plugins for free, however I don't think everyone has the time to keep tabs on the latest and greatest plugins. Compounding the problem is the fact that Eclipse development is so rapid. It's not that easy to know if a particular plugin works or not with your version of Eclipse, it's also difficult to know if one plugin doesn't "step" over another plugin. I myself am in such a bad shape that I have 5 separate installations of Eclipse at work! For $29.95 it looks like something I'm willing to pay to reduce my aggravation. Also, financially sound open source busineses are good for the "ecosystem" of open source and software in general.
Disclaimer: I don't own any stock nor am I affiliated with the company.
